BBA ANNOUNCES CARNEY AS BURTON BARNES AWARD RECIPIENT

The Birmingham Bar Association announces Jack T. Carney as the recipient of the L. Burton Barnes III Public Service Award.  The award is given annually to a member of the Birmingham Bar Association who has given freely of their time and energy in public service.  Jack Carney exemplifies the spirit of this award.

Carney has a true dedication to volunteerism, community service and public good.  He spends one week a year at Special Camp at Camp Sumatanga serving as a counselor for special needs individuals between the ages of 15 and 25.  He also serves as a volunteer coordinator for Habitat for Humanity where he has organized four annual house builds.  Carney has been instrumental in developing Habitat for Humanity programs throughout the Birmingham area.  Carney is a founding member and Past President of Hands on Birmingham Junior Board.  Hands on Birmingham coordinates community service projects for area individuals and companies, and the Junior Board actively recruits and coordinates young professionals for volunteer activities throughout the city.

Carney’s selfless desire to give back to the community and his tireless efforts to serve his profession were the traits the Birmingham Bar Association felt made Carney a perfect candidate for the Burton Barnes award.  Carney is an attorney with his own firm in Birmingham but is committed to serving others through volunteerism and community service.

Burton Barnes, for whom the award is named, was a true champion of public service and inspires not only individuals in the legal community but all Birmingham residents to give freely of their time to the betterment of the community.  Past recipients of the award include Frank Dominick, Tim Smith, Duncan Blair, Nina Miglionico, Tom Carruthers, Frank Young, III, Martha Jane Patton and Judge Orson L. (Pete) Johnson.
