The Young Lawyers Section of the Birmingham Bar Association is one of the largest and most active Sections. The purpose of the Section is to encourage the participation of young lawyers in the practice of law; to enhance the relationship among young lawyers, judges, Birmingham Bar Association members, the public and businesses; to educate young lawyers; to promote the professional development, welfare, interests, and education of the members of the Section; to encourage involvement of its members in activities of the Birmingham Bar Association; to promote community service among the members of the Section; and to provide an environment which fosters cooperation between and among young lawyers in the profession thereby enhancing the profession as a whole.

Membership is open to any person who is a) licensed to practice law in the State of Alabama, b) a member in good standing of the Birmingham Bar Association, and c) either not over the age of thirty-six (36) at the start of the term or within the first five (5) years of law practice.  Dues are $30 annually.

One of the enumerated purposes of the YLS is to promote community service.  Each year the YLS selects a local charity (or charities) for which to raise money.  The Section raises money through a fundraising campaign aimed at local law firms and organizations.  In years past, the Section has raised between $30,000 and $60,000 for charities including the Children’s Hospital Oncology and Hematology Department, Juvenile Arthritis, the Autism Society and Holy Family Christo Rey.

The Section also provides opportunities to members to volunteer within the community. In 2010 and 2011, Section members volunteered at the Firehouse Shelter to serve food to homeless men in Jefferson County; provided tornado relief in Tuscaloosa by picking up debris and sorting donations; taught law-related courses to middle school students in Birmingham City schools; and provided legal assistance at pro bono legal clinics.

The YLS also serves to promote networking and camaraderie among the members of the Birmingham Bar.  The Section hosts social functions on a quarterly basis for its membership and an annual golf tournament open to all members of the Bar.  One of the social highlights of the Section is a party hosted by Judge Scott and Cameron Vowell at their home atop Red Mountain.
